A support is a champion whose sole goal is to make sure their laning partner gets fed. They dont have to be a healer, though many of them are. The best supports are those who have a lot of crowd control effects like stuns, slows, snares, movement speed buffs, knock ups, silences, so on so forth. Healing is also a big plus. As someone pointed on in the comment section, sometimes tanks are also supports, which adds to the protection factor for the carry. There is more information on tanks below. The reason they go here is because of dragon. This lane is the closest to dragon and they are the most equipped to protect dragon should the enemy jungler invade. The support usually puts wards there, as is the supports job (among other things). During the laning phase, the duo lane is best equipped for protecting it. There needs to be a support with the AD Carry because the ADC has a weak early game, and is also squishy. Supports ensure kills and protection. Typical AD Carries: Caitlyn, KogMaw, Corki, Quinn and Valor, Miss Fortune, Varus Typical Supports . Many mages use all of their abilities to do the most damage and therefore, are left vulnerable due to cool down reductions. Because mid is the shortest of the lanes, the minions reach mid first and the champion needs to be strong enough to control the lane and get all of the minions. It is typical of a mid champion that their base auto attack is ranged, but there has been a rise in players who choose champions that are melee. The Ranged AP tends to be extremely squishy and easily killed. Because they do so much outrageous damage, they are also easily targeted because they are easily killed. The melee AP tends to be a little bit tankier, but deal less overwhelming damage at once. They tend to do sustained damage. Typical Ranged AP Carries: Ahri, Ryze, Annie, Syndra, LeBlanc, Cassiopeia, Syndra, Typical Melee AP Carries: Akali, Katarina, Kassadin, Mordekaiser, Galio not all APs are squishy, not all APs deal burst, many APs can work with sustained damage instead in fact, not all mid laners are AP, but there arent as many examples of cheap AD antimages Talon or Pantheon have been known for that for a long time, but again, are more expensive for newer players Morgana, Twisted Fate, Veigar, Zilean or Fiddlesticks could be listed as more cheap ranged mid laners Sion, Master Yi, Evelynn, ChoGath could be listed as melee mid laners there are more, but a lot of them depend on personal playstyles Top: Tanks amp Bruisers A tank is a character that usually has a lot of health and defense, allowing him to initiate team fights, take more damage, and distract the enemy while the AP and AD Carries deal damage. These tanks and bruisers go top because they are in a lane by themselves. They dont need to deal high damage. They just need to survive because it might be a little while before the jungler is able to come make a gank. This lane is also the closest to baron and the tanks are the ones who are able to best fend off enemy teams trying to kill it until allies can arrive to steal baron. It is a varied role, because many champions are able to do this. But for the most part, the typical jungler is who can survive fighting the jungle camps, usually with enough health left over to gank one of the lanes. Because of this, typical junglers usually have a higher health pool, some sort of build in sustain like life steal or spell vamp, and specifically use the Smite summoner spell. Another characteristic of a good jungler is that the champion has a high gank potential, meaning that when they pop out of a bush, they have some damaging crowd control effects that allows them to pick off targets. As I mentioned before, many types of characters can fill this role and theres no one single definition. Some supports are able to jungle, and few AP Mids are able to jungle. Most often, though, youll see bruisers and tanks jungling just because of their higher health. Its rare for an AD Carry to go into the role, though.
